Welcome, dear tourists, to the magnificent Toktogul Reservoir in Kyrgyzstan! This stunning water reservoir is located in the picturesque Toktogul district of the Jalal-Abad region. Covering an impressive surface area of 284 square kilometers, it's truly a sight to behold! The reservoir was created by constructing the Toktogul Hydropower Plant (HPP) dam on the majestic Naryn River. The charming city of Toktogul is situated on its north coast, providing a beautiful backdrop to the reservoir. The Toktogul Reservoir holds an enormous volume of water, boasting a GPP Bowl capacity of 19.5 cubic kilometers. To give you an idea of its scale, on 22nd July 2010, it held a staggering 18 billion, 207 million cubic meters of water! This reservoir also plays a crucial role in generating electricity. The Toktogul HPP includes two power stations, namely the Toktogul power station with a capacity of 1200 MW and the Kurpsay power station with 800 MW. As you explore this marvelous region, you'll notice that the water temperature varies throughout the year. In January, it can be quite chilly at around +5 °C, while in August, it becomes pleasantly warm, reaching around +30 °C. The construction of this impressive reservoir was a massive endeavor that lasted over a decade and was finally completed in the mid-1970s. The filling of the reservoir began in 1973, making it an engineering marvel. The water levels of Toktogul Reservoir can fluctuate significantly, depending on the melting of high mountain snow and the flow of water into the reservoir. At its highest, the reservoir can hold a staggering 19.5 billion cubic meters of water, while the normal level is around 17.3 billion cubic meters. The useful amount of water for various purposes is about 14 billion cubic meters, and a reserve of 5.5 billion cubic meters is kept to ensure the hydropower plant's smooth operation. For instance, on 30th March 2021, the water level reached a concerning 8.742 billion cubic meters, prompting attention to maintain sufficient water resources. So, dear tourists, come and witness the beauty and power of the Toktogul Reservoir. Marvel at the engineering feat, enjoy the serene views, and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of this breathtaking location!
