Visits: 342
The Fortress Kan (also known as the Fortress of Kudayar Khan) comprises the ruins of the Kokand Fortress, situated in the Batken Region of Kyrgyzstan, about 60 kilometers south of Batken in the mountains of the Turkestan Ridge. The Kokand Khanate was a significant state, spanning from the southern mountains of the Ferghana Valley to Lake Balkhash in modern Kazakhstan. For centuries, the Khanate was a dominant force in the region, ruling over all inhabitants within its territory. This fortress was constructed in the 17th century, during the zenith of the Kokand Khanate's power. The fortress extends nearly half a kilometer along the slopes of the Turkestan Range. Despite its age, the fortress's walls are remarkably well-preserved. Visitors can still see the numerous loopholes, rooms, and shelters built from sandstone. The fortress is divided into two sections: eastern and western. The eastern side was primarily used as a residence, while the western side epitomizes the might of the Kokand Khanate. It was nearly impregnable to enemies and served primarily for defensive purposes. During Soviet times, an apricot garden was planted within the fortress grounds. The area surrounding the fortress is very picturesque, featuring majestic mountains and pleasant spots for relaxation.
