The most legendary and mysterious cave of Central Asia, Kan-i-Gut, is situated to the west of Batken in the Shadymir mountain area, nestled on the slope of a spur of the Turkestan range. This cave holds significant historical importance as it served as one of the pivotal points along the ancient Great Silk Road, with references found in the works of Avicenna. During the 10th and 11th centuries, Kan-i-Gut was a hub for silver and mineral extraction. However, as the resources were depleted, the once bustling mine transformed into a desolate cavern, earning the ominous moniker 'Mine of Doom'. The cave complex comprises numerous caverns, deep gaps reaching up to 40 meters, narrow interlacing tunnels, and corridors. Interconnected, these features lead to over 30 chambers, with the largest stretching nearly 70 meters in length and encompassing 100,000 cubic meters. Spanning over six kilometers in length, half of which were only recently discovered in 2017, Kan-i-Gut is steeped in legend, believed to harbor countless treasures. It was even used as a place of exile, where condemned individuals were sent in the hopes they might either uncover riches or perish within the labyrinthine passages of Kan-i-Gut.
