Khan-Tengri Peak: A Majestic Summit of the Tien Shan Range
Visits: 836
Khan-Tengri Peak stands as a distinguished pinnacle within the Tengri-Tag ridge of the Tien Shan range, straddling the borders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. Revered since ancient times, this peak garnered mention from ancient Chinese authors and travelers. In the folklore of antiquity, Khan-Tengri was believed to be the abode of a deity, specifically the goddess of human destiny named Tengri. The term 'Khan-Tengri' translates from Turkic to 'Lord of the Sky'. At times, during sunset, the mountain's marble apex radiates a crimson hue under the sun's gaze, earning the colloquial monikers 'Kantau' or 'Kan-too' - the 'bloody mountain'. Despite narrowly missing the seven-thousand-meter mark with a height of 6995 meters, when considering the glacier crowning its peak, its height stretches to 7010 meters. Khan-Tengri doesn't stand alone in this domain; renowned peers such as Pobeda Peak, the dual Shatyor Peaks (western and eastern), and numerous other remarkable summits grace the vicinity. The inaugural conquest of Khan-Tengri Peak unfolded in 1931, achieved by a USSR expedition led by Mikhail Pogrebetsky. Notably, the peril lay not just in the unfamiliar elevation and route, but also the presence of Basmachi fighters roaming the local gorges. Khan-Tengri Peak is a member of the prestigious "Snow Leopard" club, a recognition granted to those who conquer seven-thousand-meter summits across the former USSR expanse. A capsule atop the peak bears the inscribed names of visitors, written in pencil due to low pressure, and then reburied. Scaling Khan-Tengri poses a challenge rated between 5A-5B-6A. Approximately 25 distinct routes exist, yet experienced guides possess an intimate familiarity with almost every slope, facilitating climbers' ascents. Climbing camps dot the south and north approaches. Khan-Tengri's eminence is showcased on Kyrgyzstan's national currency: it graces the 100 Kyrgyz som banknote of 2002.
