Altyn Arashan Valley: a Great Hiking with Hot Springs

Altyn Arashan, meaning 'The Golden Sources', is a stunning valley located around ten kilometers (6.2 miles) from the city of Karakol, in eastern Kyrgyzstan. Famous for its landscapes and hot springs, it's an ideal destination for hikes.

History: During the Soviet period, 25 snow leopards were trapped in Altyn Arashan and shipped to zoos worldwide. In 1975, hunting was banned, making it a national wildlife reserve. Today, around 20 snow leopards inhabit the valley.

At an altitude of 3,000 m (9,842 ft), Altyn Arashan is majestic. With nomads and wildlife, it offers stunning views, including the 4,260m (13,976 ft) Palatka ('Tent') Summit. Natural hot springs add to its allure.

Hiking: Altyn Arashan is renowned for its hiking trails. The journey to the hot springs takes 5-6 hours from Teploklyuchenka, 12 km (7.5 miles) east of Karakol. En route, enjoy pine forests and sightings of wildlife.

Hot Springs: Altyn Arashan boasts natural hot springs, some open-air and free, while others are in private pools. The sulphuric water, around 50°C, is believed to have healing properties.

Access: Begin your hike at the southern end of Ak-Suu's town. Take bus number 350 from Karakol to Teploklyuchenka. Alternatively, hire a Soviet jeep or rent quads for part of the journey.
