Eñilchek Glacier
Exploring the Eñilchek Glacier: A Majestic Ice Expanse in the Tien Shan Mountains
Visits: 311
The Eñilchek glacier is renowned as one of Kyrgyzstan's, if not the largest and fastest, glacial wonders. Remarkably swift, it advances at rates varying from 10 to 200 meters annually, surpassing many of its glacial counterparts. Nestled on the border with China, east of Lake Issyk-Kul, it stretches an impressive 60 kilometers. Towering in these parts are Kyrgyzstan's loftiest peaks: Pobeda Peak (7439 m), Khan-Tengri (6995 m), and other commanding summits. The Eñilchek glacier, constituting a grand glacial massif, can be demarcated into North and South regions. It is typically the South that the term 'Eñilchek glacier' refers to in its entirety, spanning an area of nearly 570 km2. At its base, alpine flowers including edelweiss flourish, whereas its upper reaches are perpetually swept by fierce winds and enduring snow. The ice's depth at the lower portions of the glacier tongue reaches 150-200 meters, while the upper segments can measure up to 500 meters. Cartographic representations and orbital photographs evocatively liken the glacier's outlines to a tree, with its branches varying in hue, length, and girth.
