🏜️ Konorchok Canyon: visitor’s guide
Konorchok, also commonly written as Konorchek or Konorchak, is a canyon landscape in Chüy Region. Its red sandstone walls, towers and winding passages offer a different side of Kyrgyzstan from its alpine valleys.
Wind and water have shaped the sandstone into a network of gullies and rock formations. A visit is about exploring this landscape on foot, rather than reaching a single viewpoint.
📍 Location and access
The canyons lie in Boom Gorge, along the road between Bishkek and Issyk-Kul. Allow approximately 125–140 km from Bishkek, depending on your departure point and chosen entrance.
Arrange transport to a confirmed trailhead and organise the return journey in advance. Agree on the pickup point and time, especially if visiting as a stop on a longer road trip.

Download an offline map or reliable route track. Do not assume that every passage connects to another entrance.
🌤️ When to visit
Choose a dry day with a suitable forecast. Mild temperatures are more comfortable for walking, while summer conditions can be hot and exposed.
Start early in warm weather and carry enough drinking water for the whole walk. Winter may bring cold conditions, ice and slippery ground; a generally dry climate does not guarantee a snow-free trail.
⚠️ Rain and flash floods
Dry channels can carry sudden floodwater or mudflows. Avoid entering during or shortly after heavy rain, and check conditions beyond the immediate trailhead.
If the forecast or local conditions are uncertain, postpone the hike. Never treat a dry channel as proof that flooding is impossible.
Avoid unstable rock edges and do not depend on an existing rope without assessing its condition. Turn back if a section exceeds your ability.
