Chu River
Chu River: A Tale of Waters and Borders in Kyrgyzstan
Visits: 1759
Witness the remarkable journey of the Chu River, birthed by the harmonious merger of the Joon Aryk and Kochkor rivers in the Kochkor District of the Naryn Region. This river unfolds a captivating narrative, meandering through diverse landscapes and shaping the boundaries of nations. Flowing near Lake Issyk-Kul in the vicinity of Balykchy, the Chu River takes an intriguing turn. While it skirts the edges of the lake, it neither enters its waters nor drains it. The Chu then embarks on a northwest trajectory, once interconnected with the lake through the Ketmaldy (Buugan) riverbed. However, the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir's construction altered this course, ensuring the river's water no longer reaches the lake during floods. Emerging from the imposing Boom Gorge, the Chu River enters the expansive Chüy Valley, a flat expanse that cradles both the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, and the Kazakh city of Shu. The river's vital waters are harnessed through a network of canals, including the Great Chüy Canal, that nourish the fertile black soils of the Chüy Valley, sustaining agriculture on both Kyrgyz and Kazakh territories. Traversing the Chüy Valley, the Chu River becomes the natural border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, marking this confluence for over a hundred kilometers. Eventually, it departs Kyrgyzstan's embrace, flowing into Kazakhstan. Like many other rivers originating in Northern Kyrgyzstan, the Chu River eventually disappears amidst the steppe, culminating its journey in the vast solonchaks of the Ashchykol Depression. During wet years, its waters may even reach the drainless salt lake, Akzhaykyn, offering a transient connection between river and desert. Explore the story of Chu River, where waters define borders and cultivate life, crafting a narrative that unites nations and landscapes in a flowing symphony.
