The Alay Valley, also spelled Alai Valley, is a broad high-altitude valley in Osh Region, southern Kyrgyzstan. Between the Alay Range to the north and the Trans-Alay Range to the south, its open pastures and snowy mountain backdrop make it a destination for photography, village stays and trekking.
What to see and do
- Sary-Mogol: use the village as a base for arranging accommodation, guides and excursions.
- Tulpar-Kul Lake: plan a separate outing to the lakes and seasonal yurt camps beneath the Pamir mountains.
- Mountain views: look toward the Trans-Alay Range and Lenin Peak when visibility allows.
- Walking and horse riding: ask a local guide to suggest a route suited to your experience and the conditions.
Getting there from Osh
The usual road approach passes through Gulcha, crosses Taldyk Pass and reaches Sary-Tash. From there, travel west toward Sary-Mogol and the wider valley.
Arrange transport in advance and confirm your exact village or accommodation. Allow time for mountain-road conditions and stops rather than treating the journey as a quick transfer.
When to visit
July to early September is a useful starting window for planning high-altitude treks. Check the season for your particular route: snow, cold and changing weather can affect access.
The valley is already high, with major visitor bases around 3,000 metres or above. Build acclimatisation time into your itinerary before attempting higher passes.
Where to stay
Look for village guesthouses or arrange a seasonal yurt stay through a local provider. Confirm opening dates, meals, bedding, toilets and transport before booking. Ask permission before photographing families or entering yurts.
Practical planning
Bring warm layers, waterproofs, sun protection, walking shoes, drinking water and an offline map. Carry some cash and confirm your return transport.
For trips toward Lenin Peak Base Camp or other border-zone destinations, check permit requirements in advance. Higher passes, glaciers and summit routes require their own preparation.
