Merzbacher Lake: The Highest Lake in Kyrgyzstan

Uncover the breathtaking beauty of Merzbacher Lake, a high-altitude ice-dammed lake nestled in the eastern part of the central Tien Shan range in Kyrgyzstan. This natural wonder, situated between the Tengri-Tag and Sarydzhaz ridges, offers a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates all who behold it. Merzbacher Lake owes its name to the pioneering German geographer Gottfried Merzbacher, whose expedition led to its discovery in 1903. Carved by the remnants of the Little Ice Age, this remarkable lake is composed of two distinct basins: the Upper and Lower Merzbacher Lakes. These basins are separated by a 400-meter elevation difference and a 3-4 km long ice river, aptly named the Merzbacher River. The lower part of the lake is bound by a glacial "dam" to the south. Twice a year, during summer and winter, the lower part experiences a dramatic event: the discharge of its waters into the valley of the Inylchek River. This phenomenon occurs within 2-7 days and can lead to a water flow exceeding 1000 m³/s in the Inylchek River. Unfortunately, these discharges often result in the destruction of bridges, roads, and other structures downstream, all the way to the Aksu River in China. At the moment of discharge, the lake releases an impressive 0.06 to 0.07 cubic kilometers of water. Scientists attribute these breakthroughs to a rise in the water temperature within the lake to 10-15 degrees Celsius. Merzbacher Lake stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature, leaving visitors humbled by its grandeur and ever-changing beauty.
