The Talas Valley is renowned for its rich historical heritage, boasting ancient archaeological sites dating back to the 7th century BC. Among these, Kulan-Koruk stands out as one of Central Asia's most mysterious and ancient cities. Nestled on an open plateau at the base of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, the remains of this fortress hold immense historical significance. First documented in the Chinese historical chronicle of Ban Gu, Kulan-Koruk is believed to have been the ancient city-fortress of Zhizhichin, serving as a military garrison for the Huns under the leadership of Zhizhi-shanyu, an ancient Turkic nomadic people. The fortress exhibited unique Roman architectural elements, reminiscent of a fort, suggesting intriguing cultural exchanges in the region. Despite centuries of history, some sections of the fortress walls retain their original form, a testament to the exceptional construction techniques employed. The walls, crafted from a special clay mixture, were designed with intricate fish scale patterns and fortified with a solid foundation. Surrounding the city was a 4-kilometer earthy moat filled with water from nearby rivers, enhancing its defensive capabilities against potential invaders. Today, the ancient settlement of Kulan-Koruk spans approximately one hectare, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past. Amidst the ruins of the stone fortress, built using Roman masonry technology, one can discover architectural remnants and rock carvings adorned with ancient runic inscriptions. Kulan-Koruk stands as a poignant reminder of the region's rich historical legacy and the enduring ingenuity of its ancient inhabitants.
