Explore Alamüdün Gorge near Bishkek: riverside walks, mountain scenery and a longer hike to Alamedin Waterfall, with practical tips for your visit.

🏔️ Alamüdün Gorge: visitor’s guide

Also known as Alamedin Gorge, this valley lies in Chüy Region on the northern slopes of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too. It offers a mountain escape from Bishkek, with trees, open meadows and views deeper into the range.

🥾 Choose your day in the gorge

  • Short visit: Choose a lower-valley walk and a picnic stop suitable for your group.
  • Waterfall hike: Allow more time and prepare for uneven mountain paths.
  • Photography: Explore river scenery and mountain views from stable ground.

Not every trail is suitable for every visitor. Choose your route according to fitness, weather and current conditions.

💦 Hike to Alamüdün Waterfall

The Alamüdün Waterfall is a destination for a longer walk in the gorge. The approximately 10-metre cascade lies at around 2,150 metres above sea level.

Plan the waterfall as a separate hiking objective rather than a quick roadside stop. Confirm the starting point, walking time and current route before setting out.

🚗 Getting there

Arrange transport from Bishkek through Koi-Tash into the gorge. Agree on the exact drop-off point and organise your return transport in advance.

Download an offline map. The place marker identifies the destination area; it should not replace a verified hiking route.

🌿 When to visit

Snow-free conditions generally make walking easier. Summer brings green scenery, while autumn has cooler temperatures and shorter days. Winter and spring may involve snow, ice and slippery paths.

Rain and snowmelt can change river conditions. A sunny morning does not guarantee safe crossings later in the day.

🎒 What to bring

  • Hiking shoes with good grip
  • Drinking water, food and a small daypack
  • Warm layers and a waterproof jacket
  • Sun protection, a charged phone and an offline map
  • A headlamp and basic first-aid supplies for longer walks

♨️ Tyoplye Klyuchi and local activities

The nearby Tyoplye Klyuchi, or “Warm Springs,” is a separate resort visit. Confirm access, opening arrangements and any charges directly.

Horse riding or other local experiences should also be arranged in advance rather than assumed to be available on arrival.

⚠️ Walk responsibly

Use established bridges where available. Do not attempt a crossing when water is fast, deep or footing is uncertain. Keep away from slippery waterfall edges and hanging ice.

Choose a turnaround time, tell someone your plan and carry out all rubbish. For an unfamiliar or longer route, consider an experienced local guide.
